Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about EAN, UPC, and GTIN barcodes — answered clearly and simply.

Barcode Basics

Understanding EAN, UPC, and GTIN barcodes

EAN stands for European Article Number. An EAN-13 barcode is a 13-digit product identification code and barcode symbol that is the global standard for retail product labelling. EAN barcodes are used on virtually all consumer goods packaging sold in supermarkets, retail stores, and online marketplaces worldwide — including India. When a cashier scans a product at a store checkout, they are scanning an EAN or UPC barcode.
EAN-13 is a 13-digit barcode used internationally — India, Europe, Asia, and most of the world. UPC-A is a 12-digit barcode historically used in the United States and Canada. In practice, a UPC-A code is simply an EAN-13 code with a leading zero added in front. They represent the same product identifier (GTIN) just in different formats. Every package from Planet Retail includes both EAN-13 and UPC-A formats automatically.
GTIN stands for Global Trade Item Number. It is the umbrella term used by Amazon, Google Shopping, and other platforms to refer to product identifiers. Both EAN-13 and UPC-A codes are types of GTIN. When Amazon India or Flipkart asks for your product's GTIN, you simply enter your EAN barcode number from the package we deliver. The two terms (EAN and GTIN) are used interchangeably in most e-commerce contexts.
Yes. Our barcode packages consist of reseller / legacy-origin EAN and UPC codes in the 060–089 prefix range, originally issued by the Uniform Code Council (UCC, now GS1-US). These are genuine, globally unique barcode numbers. Important note: purchasing from us does not register your company directly on GS1's website, and our barcodes are not directly issued by GS1 India. If you specifically need GS1 India membership (which issues 890-prefixed barcodes), you should contact gs1india.org directly. Our barcodes are widely accepted for e-commerce listings and product packaging.
The 060–089 number range refers to the GS1 company prefix range originally issued by the Uniform Code Council (UCC, now known as GS1-US) in the United States. Barcodes in this range are globally valid and widely accepted by retail chains and e-commerce platforms worldwide including India. They are different from GS1 India's 890-prefixed barcodes which are exclusively issued directly by GS1 India.

Fees & Validity

Annual fees, pricing, and how long barcodes last

No. Absolutely none. You pay once and own your barcodes for life. There are no annual subscription fees, no renewal charges, no hidden costs, and no ongoing payments of any kind. This is one of the biggest advantages of buying from Planet Retail versus joining GS1 India directly, which requires annual membership fees.
Your barcodes have lifetime validity. Once you receive your barcode package, those unique numbers belong to you permanently. You can use them today, next year, or 10 years from now. There is no expiry date and no need for renewal.
No problem at all. You can buy a larger package now to benefit from the lower per-code price and assign unused barcodes to new products whenever you need them — there is no time limit or pressure to use them all at once. Many sellers buy a 50 or 100 pack upfront to cover future product launches.
You need one unique barcode for each distinct product variant. A "variant" is any combination of product features that makes it a separate, distinguishable item — for example: a t-shirt in size S = 1 barcode, size M = 1 barcode, size L = 1 barcode. A different colour of the same size = 1 more barcode. So a single t-shirt in 3 sizes and 4 colours would need 12 barcodes (3 × 4). We recommend adding a few extra to your order to cover future additions.

Platforms & Where to Use

Amazon, Flipkart, retail and packaging use

Yes. Amazon India accepts EAN-13 barcodes as valid GTINs for creating new product listings. You enter your EAN barcode number during the product creation process on Seller Central. Our barcodes are suitable for this purpose. Note: some product categories on Amazon may have specific requirements, and Amazon also offers GTIN exemption for brands that qualify. Contact us on WhatsApp if you need guidance during your listing process.
Yes. Flipkart and Jiomart accept EAN-13 barcodes for product listings. When registering your product on these platforms, you can use the EAN number from your package as the product barcode. Our team can guide you through the process via WhatsApp if needed.
Yes. The PDF barcode files we deliver are high-resolution and print-ready at 100% magnification (the standard retail barcode size). You can send these files directly to your packaging designer or printing house to include on boxes, labels, wrappers, and any other product packaging material.
No. Each barcode number must be unique to one specific product variant. Using the same barcode on multiple different products is incorrect practice and will cause problems at checkout, in inventory systems, and on e-commerce platforms. You need one unique barcode for each distinct product (variant). If you have 10 different products, you need 10 different barcodes.
Yes. Our barcodes are in the 060–089 prefix range, which is globally valid. They are accepted by retail chains and e-commerce platforms in India and internationally. The UPC-A format included in your package is also specifically the format used in North American retail markets.
There is no mandatory registration required to use your barcodes on product packaging or for e-commerce listing purposes. However, if you want your barcode to appear in a global barcode lookup database, you can optionally list your product and barcode information for free at gtinlookup.org. This is optional, not required.

Files & Technical

Formats, resolution, and how to use barcode files

By default, every order includes PDF barcode image files and an Excel/text number list. Additionally, the following formats are available at no extra cost on request: JPEG, PNG, EPS (vector, ideal for packaging designers), and TIFF. Simply mention the formats you need when placing your order via WhatsApp or email.
Yes. All barcode images are delivered at high resolution, print-ready at 100% magnification (the standard GS1 retail barcode size). They can be scaled between 80% and 200% magnification for various packaging sizes without quality loss. PDF and EPS vector formats are especially recommended for packaging artwork files.
Simply forward the PDF or EPS barcode file to your packaging designer. They will place it in the correct location on your packaging artwork. The standard recommended placement is on the back or bottom of the package, with quiet zones (white space) on both sides of the barcode as per retail standards.
The Excel file contains a plain list of all your barcode numbers in a spreadsheet format. You can use it to: (1) assign barcodes to specific products in your inventory management system, (2) upload barcode numbers in bulk to Amazon, Flipkart, or other platforms, (3) share with your logistics partner or warehouse system, (4) track which barcode you have assigned to which product. It is a reference and management tool alongside the barcode image files.

Support & Refund Policy

After-sales support, refunds, and guarantees

If the barcode codes we supply do not work as expected — meaning they fail to scan on standard retail barcode scanners or are rejected by a platform for a technical reason directly related to the barcode number — we will provide a full refund or replacement. Contact us on WhatsApp at +91 8920675323 or email planetretail1@gmail.com with details of the issue. Please note: scanning issues caused by incorrect printing scale, poor print quality, or packaging design are outside our control and are not grounds for a refund.
We offer a refund if the barcode codes themselves do not work for their intended technical purpose (i.e., the barcode numbers are defective or non-functional). Since barcode packages are digital goods delivered immediately by email, we do not offer refunds for change-of-mind purchases or if you ordered the wrong quantity. Please review our full Refund Policy page for details.
